Chapter 9

After Brenda dropped Joyce off at her car, she began her drive home. Joyce had insisted Brenda go home, while Joyce would help Melissa lock up the truck. The thought of seeing Sophie and Charlie immediately brightened her mood. Even though she had a lot on her mind after the day’s events, she wanted to bring home a bright smile for both of them.

Brenda turned off the car and took a deep breath. Yes, Tony was dead, and it was a tragic event. But what she couldn’t get off her mind was the thought that Juniper really did have something to do with Tony’s death. She hated to disagree with Joyce. Joyce never seemed to mind, she had a very logical mind, but it always made Brenda feel a little uneasy when they didn’t agree.

As Brenda stepped out of the car, she saw the light spilling through the large front window and her mood brightened. She didn’t have to bring home a good attitude, just arriving at home improved her attitude on its own. She opened the door, and instantly heard a shriek.

“Mommy’s home!” Sophie rushed toward the door and threw her arms around Brenda’s waist the moment she stepped inside. “Where have you been?” She looked up at her with a frown. “I was waiting for you all afternoon. Daddy doesn’t know how to play Doctor Harry.”

“Oh, he doesn’t?” Brenda smiled as she picked Sophie up in her arms. She realized that it wouldn’t be long before she wouldn’t be able to pick her up anymore. For a fleeting moment she felt some sadness, then she set her daughter back down on the floor and smiled. She liked the fact that Sophie was growing up, but at the same time she sometimes missed the time they spent alone together before Sophie went off to school and she started Donuts on the Move with Joyce.

“I read the directions.” Charlie shook his head as he stepped into the living room. “But she kept saying I wasn’t playing it right.”

“We have invented a few rules.” Brenda smiled as she leaned close to kiss him. “Don’t worry, I’ll teach you later.”

“You look tired.” Charlie brushed a few strands of hair away from her face.

“Thanks.” Brenda laughed as she pulled away from him.

“I’m sorry.” Charlie pulled her close again. “You know I didn’t mean it that way. I’m just a little worried about all this running around you’re doing. I know you have a lot on your mind. I want to hear about everything. But I think Doctor Harry might have to come first.” He pointed to the game still spread out on the coffee table.

“I’m on it.” Brenda smiled as Sophie grabbed her hand and led her to the table.

After a few rounds of Doctor Harry, Brenda sent Sophie off to gather her homework. As she stood up from the coffee table, Charlie whisked in with a cup of coffee for her.

“Now, tell me.” He sat down on the couch and tugged her down beside him.
